Yoga Class Descriptions

Introduction to Iyengar Yoga:
This class is for beginning students and those new to the yoga or to the Iyengar method. Introductory classes acquaint students with the fundamentals of yoga and the language used in regular Iyengar yoga classes and prepares them for progression to Level 1.

Level 1:
The basis of the method is taught in standing poses, Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) and other fundamental postures. (Completing the Introductory Series is not required to attend Level 1 classes).

Level 2:
For students who are well practiced in Level 1 postures, including Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulderstand). Basic postures are refined and Sirsasana (headstand), and backbends are taught.

Level 3:
For students with substantial Iyengar Yoga training who are strong in standing postures, can do Sirsasana and Sarvangasana with confidence for five minutes, and can push up into Urdhva Dhanurasana. Handstand and Forearm balance are introduced and intermediate postures are taught.

Level 4:
For serious students and teachers. Independent practice should be well established. Note: must have teacher’s permission to attend.

General Class:
For students of all levels, except those new to Yoga.

Ageless Yoga:
This class is for students of any level, at any age who are interested in building physical and emotional strength and flexibilty through the practice of yoga asana (postures).  Great for people with arthritis, low back pain, knee, hip or shoulder issues. This class is an opportunity for those students who never thought they could do yoga to learn how and have fun.

Prenatal Yoga:
During pregnancy, we need to practice Yoga in a special way. This class will allow you to build strength and increase flexibility in a way that meets your body’s unique needs.  Because of the shared experience, you will connect with others and build support during one of the milestones in a woman’s life.

Pranayama:
“Pranayama involves the precise regulation of the rhythm of inhalation, retention and exhalation of breath (B. Stoler Miller).” This class is both an opportunity to move beyond the elementary levels of pranayama and an exploration of the practice of the three of the eight limbs of Yoga that come after postures (asana):  withdrawl of the senses (pratyahara), concentration (dharana) and meditation (dhyana). Note: For those students have a minimum of one year of Iyengar Yoga experience.
